A string of recent medical malpractice plaintiff’s wins has some practitioners in the area wondering whether the streak is the beginning of a trend or merely a coincidence.

With the strength of insurance companies and statutory damages caps, medical malpractice cases tend to favor defendants. But four recent cases brought about jury verdicts in the millions. Much of that money will be reduced, though.

Lorraine Parker, a partner at Parker Lipman obtained a $3.87 million verdict in Denver District Court in December. She noticed that over the following few months, plaintiffs received millions in trial. She described it as an “aberration” but wondered if there was more to it.

“We get hundreds of calls from people with potential malpractice cases, and 99.9 percent of them, we have to tell them we’re so sorry … you can’t possibly prevail,” she said.
